Histology

Histology and Embryology was one of the most interesting courses I had to take on my journey to becoming a dental hygienist. Although this course was very interesting it was also one of the courses, I found to be most challenging. Not only was this course intimidating because of the scientific cell slides I had to remember but also because of the importance of understanding human and tooth development for clinical application.

Due to the fact that this course was a part of my second term some of the information that was once so fresh is now gone which is why I would like to re-visit this course and bridge some of the gaps in my knowledge. The chapters in which I would like to dive deeper into are Chapter 5: Development of Teeth and Chapter 6: Eruption and Shedding of Teeth. I am looking forward to studying these chapters and using the broader dental knowledge I now have to help me understand the concepts better.

After reviewing both chapter 5 & 6 of oral histology and embryology I can honestly say not only have I bridge the gaps in my knowledge but also refreshed information that will help me clinically.  I learned that although tooth formation is a continuous process it is characterized by a series of stages called: bud, cap, and bell stage. These stages are important to be familiar with as they are crucial in proper tooth development and begin as early as 6 – 8 weeks in utero.

I also reviewed and made charts to help me retain the dates for both primary and permanent dentition development, eruption, and shedding. I will not only use the charts and images I created to help me study for my board exams this September but also to add to my quick reference binder encase I need to recall information to education my clients while providing care at the Niagara College Dental Hygiene Clinic.
